The Cottage Hill Foundation was founded in 1976 in order to protect the neighborhood from plans of industrial rezoning.(4) The Foundation began to preserve and restore many of the historic Victorian style homes in the area. The foundation has also worked to protect and maintain the irreplaceable character and charm that the neighborhood possesses. In 1974 the area was designated as a historic district by the city. In 1975 Cottage Hill was placed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage and the following year it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.(1)  In recent years the Cottage Hill Foundation has evolved into a neighborhood association, promoting the area with events and other outreach efforts.
