Browder v. Gayle
Browder v. Gayle
60th Anniversary
Browder v. Gayle (1956) was one of the many civil rights cases that challenged the earlier Supreme Court ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). Plessy v Ferguson brought about the "separate but equal" doctrine that resulted in the passing of Jim Crow laws in the South. Browder v. Gayle was a result of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which marked a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement and helped to create one of its greatest leaders, Martin Luther King Jr. We hope this exhibit encourages additional research about Browder v. Gayle, as well as related cases, through resources available at the Montgomery County Archives.
