John J. Dowe Jr.
John Dowe Jr., the creator of John Dowe collection, hailed from the prominent Dowe family of Montgomery. Dowe was a graduate of the University of Alabama and served in the Army Air Corps from March 11, 1942 until November 11, 1945. Active in civic life, Dowe served as a scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts for over twenty years, and took part in activities associated with Montgomery, Alabama’s St. Peter’s Catholic Church. His many accomplishments include; being named a Knight of the Order of St.Gregory by Pope Pius XII in 1952, the St. George emblem, The honor of the Order of the Arrow, the Title Eagle Scout, the Silver Beaver award, Distinguished service award, and the Montgomery exchange club's Golden Deed award. Dowe evidently continuously researched his family’s history. This collection is the product of that research. 1
