John M.     Dowe

1818-1877

John M. Dowe was the patriarch of the Dowe family. Born in Ireland, Dowe later immigrated to the United States and settled in Montgomery, Alabama sometime during the 1840s. On May 29, 1851 he married Joanna Donavan, also an Irish immigrant. Dowe became a naturalized United States citizen on November 26, 1855, when he appeared before the circuit court of Montgomery County.1 He had the original Dowe house constructed at 334 Washington Avenue in 1863.  He was an established grocer and confectioner in Montgomery until his death on June 27, 1877.
